Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA) Condemns Violation of Human Rights in the Abduction of Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS) President, Gabisile Ndukuya

01 February, 2024

As Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA), we vehemently condemn the egregious violation of human rights surrounding the abduction of Gabisile Ndukuya, President of the Swaziland National Union of Students (SNUS), on Thursday, February 2, 2024. The abduction, perpetrated by the Swaziland Police Force, is a reprehensible act of oppression and an affront to the principles of justice and democracy.

It is particularly alarming that this abduction occurred on the eve of the Swaziland National Union of Students’ planned petition delivery for the “Jobs and Scholarships for All Campaign.” This timing suggests a deliberate attempt to suppress dissent and intimidate those advocating for fundamental rights and socio-economic justice.

LAW-DERSWA stands in solidarity with Gabisile Ndukuya, SNUS, and all individuals striving for a more equitable and democratic Swaziland. We call for the immediate release of Gabisile Ndukuya and demand accountability for those responsible for her abduction. Furthermore, we urge the Swazi authorities to respect the rights of all citizens to peaceful assembly, expression, and advocacy without fear of reprisal.

The pursuit of a just society requires the protection of human rights and the rule of law. Any actions to undermine these principles must be met with swift condemnation and decisive action. LAW-DERSWA remains committed to upholding these values and will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of all Swazi citizens.

End.
