21 February, 2024

We express our solidarity with former members of parliament, Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube, who are facing legal challenges in Swaziland. Bacede Mabuza’s comprehensive summary of his experiences highlights systemic issues and challenges faced by individuals striving for democratic reform. His commitment to representing the interests of the people, despite personal sacrifices, reflects and dedication of justice and political change.

Mabuza’s account sheds lights on alleged corruption with government and the limitations imposed on parliamentary autonomy. The struggle is he describes, including the alleged interference in parliamentary decisions and victimization of dissenting voices, raise concerns about the state of democracy and political freedom in Swaziland.

Moreover, Mabuza’s commitment to advocating for constitutional amendments and political reforms, even from behind bars, underscores the importance of addressing the evolving political landscape in the country.

As Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAWDERSWA), we stand in support of Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube, urging a fair and impartial evaluation of their cases. We encourage a thorough examination of the concerns raised by Mabuza, fostering an environment where political engagement and calls for reform are met with understanding and dialogue rather than legal persecution.

In the pursuit of justice and democratic values, we call upon the legal system to uphold principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. The voices of individuals like Bacede Mabuza, advocating for political change, deserve to be heard and considered within the framework of a just and equitable legal process.

LAW-DERSWA remains committed to supporting those working towards democratic reform in Swaziland and addressing the challenges faced by individuals striving for political change.
