Statement by Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA) on the So-called 6 September Independence Day in Eswatini
6 September 2024
As Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA), we stand united in our commitment to truth, justice and the genuine liberation of the Swazi people. Today, we address the false narrative perpetuated by the government of Eswatini regarding 6 September as “Independence Day.” This day, heralded by the regime as a celebration of freedom and self-determination, is, in reality, a stark reminder of the ongoing oppression, exploitation and subjugation of the people of Eswatini.
True independence is not merely the symbolic lowering of a colonial flag; it is the empowerment of the people to determine their own destiny through democratic governance, the protection of human rights and the establishment of the rule of law. Yet, 55 years after the supposed attainment of independence, the people of Eswatini continue to be denied these fundamental rights.
Under the Tinkhundla system, which remains entrenched in the fabric of Swazi society, power is concentrated in the hands of a few, while the majority of citizens are systematically silenced, oppressed and deprived of their rights. The government has consistently used violence, intimidation and legal manipulation to suppress any voices that dare to demand true independence and freedom.
The continued imprisonment of political prisoners, the violent repression of peaceful protests and the stifling of free speech are clear indications that the so-called “independence” celebrated on 6 September is nothing more than a facade. It is a day that serves to mask the ongoing struggle of the Swazi people for genuine self-determination and democracy.
LAW-DERSWA calls on the people of Eswatini and the international community to recognize the truth: that the fight for real independence is far from over. We must continue to challenge the regime’s false narratives and work tirelessly toward a future where the rights and freedoms of all Emaswati are fully realized.
On this 6 September, let us not celebrate a lie, but instead, renew our commitment to the struggle for true independence—one that is rooted in justice, democracy and respect for human rights. The path to real freedom is paved with the courage to confront uncomfortable truths and the determination to demand the change our people deserve.
