Commendation of the Unwavering Commitment to Democratic Reform in Eswatini by Incarcerated Members of Parliament, Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube

March 18, 2024

As Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland, we stand in solemn anticipation as the sentencing
of the esteemed advocates for democracy, Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube, draws near.
Since their unjust detention on July 25th, 2021, our hearts have been both heavy with concern and
lifted by their unwavering spirit.
Throughout their ordeal, Bacede and Mthandeni have epitomized hope, resilience, and defiance in
the face of tyranny.

They have exemplified true patriotism, demonstrating to the people of Eswatini
the unyielding resolve required to champion democracy. Despite the immense personal sacrifices,
they have endured – the loss of livelihoods, health challenges, dissolution of families and the
destruction of businesses – they have remained steadfast in their commitment to the cause.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the families of Bacede and Mthandeni for their remarkable
strength and resilience during these trying times. Their willingness to stand alongside us in prayer
and solidarity has been a source of inspiration and fortitude.

As we await the verdict, we are reminded that justice is not always found within the confines of a
courtroom. Whatever sentence is handed down to Bacede and Mthandeni, we believe that it will be
magnified twofold upon the conscience of the judge and the government of Eswatini.
In the pursuit of a more just and democratic future for Eswatini, we vow to continue our unwavering
support for Bacede, Mthandeni and all those who bravely fight for the principles of freedom and
equality. Their sacrifice shall not be in vain, and their legacy shall endure as a beacon of hope for
generations to come.
