Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA) congratulates the youth of Kenya

01 July 2024

The Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA) wishes to extend heartfelt congratulations to the youth of Kenya. Their unity and bravery over the past week, culminating in the decision by President William Ruto not to sign the controversial tax bill, stand as a powerful testament to the impact of collective action and civic engagement. This moment is not only commendable but serves as an educational milestone for all Africans, especially the youth, to rise against policies and governance that threaten their future and the welfare of their countries.

We share in the sadness for the loss of over 22 young lives during this critical fight for justice and economic fairness. These courageous individuals, who paid the ultimate price for standing up for a righteous cause, remind us that their sacrifices are not in vain. Their bloodshed underscores the significance and worthiness of their struggle, even amidst the prevailing uncertainties about Kenya’s economic future.

The resilience and determination displayed by Kenyan youth echo the memories of the June 29th, 2021 Massacre in Swaziland. On that tragic day, over 100 lives were lost, and over 300 people were injured as they called for democracy. Three years later, justice remains elusive for the victims of that massacre, yet their sacrifices continue to inspire our ongoing fight against the injustices faced by Emaswati. Their blood serves as a constant reminder for us to persist in our quest for justice and democratic reforms.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the recent protests and to those affected by the police brutality, abductions and torture. We empathize deeply with their pain, as we witness similar oppression inflicted upon political activists in Swaziland by the oppressive regime of King Mswati III and his mercenaries. The struggles and sufferings endured are etched into our collective memory, fueling our relentless pursuit of justice and democratic freedoms.

In solidarity with the youth of Kenya, we reaffirm our commitment to standing against oppression and injustice. Your courage serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, inspiring all of us to continue the fight for a better and more just future.

Aluta Continua!
