It has been over 500 days since the brutal assassination of Human Rights Defender and Lawyer, Comrade Thulani Maseko. Despite the relentless calls for justice from various quarters, the Eswatini government continues to turn a blind eye to this grievous injustice.
Comrade Thulani Maseko was tragically murdered on January 21, 2023, at his homestead in Luyengo, Manzini, in front of his wife and children. His assassination shocked not only Eswatini but also the international community. A month after his death, Amnesty International called for an independent investigation into his unlawful killing. Yet, more than 500 days later, justice remains elusive.
Maseko was a staunch advocate for democracy, consistently challenging the Eswatini government’s oppressive tactics and calling for political reforms. His outspoken criticism was met with hostility from the regime. His death followed a chilling announcement by King Mswati III, who declared that those opposing the state or advocating for political change would face severe consequences.
In August 2023, the Eswatini police issued a statement claiming progress in the investigation and promising a breakthrough. However, Maseko’s family has received no further updates. Instead, his wife, Tenele Maseko, has faced ongoing harassment and intimidation from the authorities for her persistent fight for justice.
Despite the lack of justice, over a year after his death, Thulani Maseko’s legacy endures. His tireless work remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for those he championed. International recognition of his efforts continues, exemplified by the establishment of the Thulani Maseko Justice Prize. This award honours the courageous work of human rights defenders worldwide. This year, the prize was posthumously awarded to the late Russian dissident and opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who, like Maseko, stood bravely against oppressive regimes.
The calls for justice for Thulani Maseko resonate loudly, echoing through the hearts and minds of those who continue to fight for freedom and human rights. His legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for justice and the relentless pursuit of democratic ideals.
