15 May 2024
As the Lawyers for Democratic Reform in Swaziland (LAW-DERSWA) we observe with profound
concern the escalating wave of societal dissatisfaction gripping the nation of Eswatini. The recent
displacements of indigenous inhabitants from their ancestral territories in favour of profit-driven
agendas highlight a distressing shortfall in individual liberties. Moreover, the ongoing deprivation of
fundamental rights, including the freedom to peacefully assemble and express opinions, as
guaranteed by the 2002 constitution, underscores systemic deficiencies within our governance
structure
On this day, Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, our populace peacefully endeavoured to articulate their
grievances concerning the Gege evictions and other factors exacerbating impoverishment.
Unfortunately, the governmental response was characterized by disproportionate force, including
the deplorable assault on elderly citizens and the arbitrary detention of advocates for democratic
principles. Such actions not only suppress dissent but also perpetuate a cycle of brutality and
subjugation
To propel our society towards enduring tranquillity and prosperity, we stress the imperative need
for inclusive political discourse. It is only through constructive dialogue and mutual regard that we
can navigate a path towards a more democratic and equitable political framework.
LAW-DERSWA vehemently demands the immediate cessation of the prohibition on public
demonstrations and the unconditional liberation of all individuals incarcerated for political reasons.
We vehemently denounce the violence perpetrated against peaceful protestors and call for the
immediate release of individuals such as Siboniso Mkhabela, unlawfully detained during today’s
peaceful demonstration in solidarity with the Gege evictees.
In solidarity with the aspirations of our populace, LAW-DERSWA reiterates its unwavering
commitment to championing justice, democracy, and human rights for all inhabitants of Eswatini.
